DIGITAL THINKING AND NETWORKING TRADING
With the Berlin University of Digital Sciences in its founding phase, the Berlin University of Digital Sciences is creating a platform for innovative, internationally oriented master's degree courses with differentiated "digital" focal points, which can demonstrate an outstanding USP due to its flexibility and high speed of adaptation to changing framework conditions.
The Berlin University of Digital Sciences has applied to the Senate of Berlin for state accreditation as a university university and is therefore in the process of being founded (i. Gr.) or in the process of state accreditation. This procedure lasts over several months and therefore the Berlin University of Digital Sciences is expected to start its academic operations in summer/autumn 2018. A close cooperation with the Humboldt University of Berlin is planned and in discussion process.
The Berlin University of Digital Sciences (i. Gr.) concentrates as a "school" at university level on digital sciences, with specialisation in digital economy, digital communication, data analytics and digital law being possible.
The higher education landscape and the importance of education are changing in the context of digitalization and globalization in all essential areas. Regardless of whether it is organizational, content or didactic, new concepts are needed for the challenges of the training of new - digital - competences. Certain areas will undoubtedly also be covered by existing state or private universities. However, a clear focus on digitalization and the challenges associated with the changed framework conditions can only be achieved with a thematically focused and organizationally flexible start-up.
The BUDS thus occupies a narrowly defined range of universities that does not yet exist in this form at any university. It is training content designed to ensure professional success with new competence profiles.
How we are going to implement our mission statement In close cooperation with the business community and internationally renowned partner universities, it prepares students in master's degree courses and research training groups for mastering professional challenges in the digital world of work. The mission of the BUDS is to empower students to understand the processes of transformation and to be able to actively promote them as professionals. Personality development and international orientation will be encouraged. A sustainable and lifelong learning will be facilitated by the courses of study and certification. In addition, special emphasis is placed on the development of logical and structured thinking and action using analytical methods.
The offerings of the BUDS are focused on digital sciences, with a focus on digital business processes, information processes, legal framework conditions and data communication. We also design the university attendance time to suit full-time offers and employees, supplemented by online offers to promote the compatibility of family, work and studies. Our courses can be combined in modules to form internationally recognised degrees (Master of Science and MBA) The study concept is interdisciplinary, independent, international, doctoral and practical. The optional modules provide for current accents and transdisciplinary implementations. The curriculum provides for a flexible structure of study processes without any time and content restrictions. The BUDS strives for interdisciplinary and at the same time transdisciplinary networking.
To this end, representatives of various scientific disciplines work systematically together with users and representatives of knowledge from professional and social practice as a joint faculty in studies, teaching, research and development. In transformative research, which is oriented towards societal problems and develops concrete transformation paths, we see ourselves as part of the international scientific community and, in cooperation with universities in suitable fields of research, enable doctoral studies.
We keep Humboldt's tradition alive by taking into account the diverse perspectives of science and society and focusing on their future issues. We attach great importance to respectful interaction with one another and promote dialogue between cultures. Equality of opportunity and gender as well as interculturality are among the central tasks of each individual and the university as a whole. The members of the university take into account the particularities of people and support learners in making the best use of their talents and abilities, irrespective of educational background, gender, social or ethnic origin.
The underlying idea of the BUDS can be traced back to years of concept development. For many years, Prof. Dr. Mike Friedrichsen has been discussing with national and international colleagues about an alternative university institution focusing on the new framework conditions of digital change. Various models of connection to an existing university were also considered. Ultimately, however, all these considerations have led to a separate and, above all, independent approach, combined with close cooperation between the existing networks. The result is the present concept of the BUDS.
The carrier company Berlin University of Digital Sciences gGmbH was founded by the operator BUDS Förder Fonds e.V. In the meantime, prominent advocates from politics, science and society have been won to support the concept.
In accordance with the requirements of the Berlin Senate and the Science Council, the Berlin University of Digital Sciences gGmbH will be provided with the necessary financial means. The BUDS Förder Fonds is thus also the sole shareholder of the non-profit Berlin University of Digital Sciences gGmbH. It is important at this point that it is always guaranteed that no influence can be exerted on the scientific operations of the university.
Tuition fees: This is an important factor in revenue. The cost of studying at BUDS is in the upper third of comparable courses.
Certificates: With this source of income, the connection to companies is also to be established and implemented sustainably. The certificates can be adapted to the requirements of the market at short notice and can also be integrated into the Master's programmes (with additional academic examination) in the modular option.
Research institutes: With specific scientific services such as research and development contracts from industry, the institutes (six institutes are already in the process of being set up) should contribute to refinancing.
Research funding: Applying for research funding from various sources such as the German Research Foundation, the EU, foundations or ministries is another source of income for the "Berlin School".
Licensing system: The development of modules, certificates and teaching materials associated with the brand should generate income after implementation of the platform and system infrastructure in long-term planning as offers with one-off or monthly licensing costs.
Donations/Sponsors: Last but not least - based on a successful start - donations are to be generated by companies, private individuals or organisations. This will include events, conferences and workshops as well as endowed professorships and grants for new academic education programmes.
